The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has announced that Nigeria will not be submitting any film for consideration in the International Feature Film category at the 2026 Academy Awards. After receiving six film submissions earlier in the year, the committee decided by majority vote that none met the international standards required for Oscar competition.

NOSC Chairperson Stephanie Linus cited deficiencies in creative and technical intentionality as the primary reason behind the no-submission decision. Despite acknowledging the significant progress Nigerian cinema has made and growing awareness of Academy standards, the committee stressed the need for further improvements to enhance Nigeria’s competitive potential on the global stage.

In response, NOSC plans to take more proactive measures to encourage filmmakers to produce films with Oscar eligibility in mind. Filmmakers are also encouraged to study previous International Feature Film nominees to better understand and meet the Academy’s expectations.

This marks the third time in five years that Nigeria has opted not to submit a film for the Oscars, reflecting ongoing challenges in the country’s film industry despite its growth and global recognition.
