The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a sharp jab at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting that Nigeria held the title of Africa’s number one economy when the PDP handed over power in 2015. The PDP’s remarks come amid growing economic challenges faced by the country in recent years, which they say point to mismanagement by the APC-led government.
According to economic data reviewed from the period, Nigeria’s GDP per capita peaked around 2014 before experiencing fluctuations in the subsequent years. During PDP’s tenure, the country enjoyed periodic growth and was ranked among the top economies on the continent. However, since 2015, Nigeria’s economy has struggled with issues such as inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits, which the PDP attributes to APC policies.
Critics within the PDP argue that under APC governance, Nigeria has lost significant economic ground to other African countries like South Africa and Egypt. They highlight recent statistics showing Nigeria slipping in its nominal GDP rankings and express concerns over deteriorating economic conditions that affect ordinary Nigerians.
The PDP’s criticism aims to highlight their past economic stewardship and to cast doubt on the APC’s current management, positioning themselves as a better option for future leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
