The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has congratulated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) on his appointment as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and urged him to prioritize the true national interest of Nigeria in his leadership role. In a recent statement, the SDP emphasized the high expectations Nigerians have for INEC to conduct transparent, credible, and impartial elections that uphold democratic principles.

The party called on Amupitan to focus on consolidating Nigeria’s democracy by ensuring efficient and fair electoral processes, especially as the country approaches critical elections in the coming years. SDP highlighted that Nigerians expect nothing less than an electoral body that prioritizes the country’s unity, stability, and development above partisan considerations or political pressures.

SDP also urged Amupitan to work towards improving voter education, election security, and the timely release of credible results, reinforcing the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system. The party expressed optimism that under Amupitan’s stewardship, INEC would effectively address challenges that have plagued previous elections, restoring public confidence in the electoral process.

The call from SDP aligns with similar sentiments from other political actors and civil society groups who stress the importance of INEC’s independence and commitment to national interest in the upcoming electoral cycles.
