The Nigerian Police have provided reasons for the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and his lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, during the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja. According to police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, the arrests occurred because the individuals insisted on advancing into restricted areas designated as “no-protest zones” by a court order. These zones include sensitive government buildings and locations such as Aso Rock, the National Assembly, and others.

The protest, which was organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, aimed to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in custody since June 2021 on terrorism-related charges. The police had warned ahead of the demonstration about the court restrictions but faced resistance from some protesters who attempted to breach these limits.

The arrests were reportedly accompanied by clashes between protesters and security forces, including use of tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds. Human rights activists have condemned the police actions as excessive, demanding the immediate release of those detained. Barrister Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel were taken to the FCT Command CID, Abuja, following their detention.

This incident highlights the escalating tensions around the Nnamdi Kanu case and the ongoing struggle between protest groups and security agencies in Nigeria. The police urge all parties to respect court orders and maintain peaceful conduct while exercising their rights.
