Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen is among the top contenders for the prestigious 2025 CAF African Player of the Year award, facing off against heavyweights Mohamed Salah of Egypt and Achraf Hakimi of Morocco. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently unveiled a 10-man shortlist that includes these three football superstars, setting the stage for a thrilling contest for the continent’s highest individual honor.
Osimhen, currently playing for Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, is Nigeria’s sole representative in the men’s player category and is hoping to reclaim the award he won in 2023. Known for his clinical finishing and consistent goal-scoring prowess, Osimhen had another impressive year, making him a worthy candidate alongside Salah and Hakimi.
Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s talisman, earned the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker Award after netting 29 league goals and providing 18 assists last season. Achraf Hakimi was instrumental for Paris Saint-Germain in winning the domestic league and cup double, as well as the UEFA Champions League, further cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s finest players.
The shortlist also includes other notable players such as Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa (Cameroon), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea), Fiston Mayele (DR Congo), and Denis Bouanga (Gabon), reflecting the depth of talent across the continent.
The final winner will be chosen by a panel of CAF experts, coaches, former players, and media representatives based on performances from January 6 to October 15, 2025. This award will signify not only individual excellence but also contributions to national and club success over the year.
Fans and football analysts are eagerly awaiting the results as the competition promises to showcase the best of African football talent on the global stage.
