Former Lagos State Governor and prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Babatunde Fashola has dismissed speculation about a possible merger among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. Speaking at an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, Fashola emphasized that the opposition parties cannot replicate the historic merger that gave birth to the APC, the only successful political merger in Nigeria’s history.
Fashola noted that while opposition groups are currently trying to form coalitions, the process is proving difficult, and official campaigning has not yet begun, as stated in the Electoral Act. He stressed that the APC’s progressive agenda and its commitment to improving the human condition remain central to the party’s strategy moving forward.
He praised the resilience and contributions of APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, for their role in sustaining the party’s unity and progress. Fashola also expressed concern over rising voter apathy despite increasing voter registration, urging stakeholders to engage with and mobilize voters to boost turnout in future elections.
His remarks reflect the APC’s confidence in its organizational strength and highlight the challenges facing a fragmented opposition as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 polls.
