The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed that at least four incumbent governors from opposition parties are currently in advanced discussions to defect to the ruling party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. This strategic move, according to party insiders, is part of APC’s broader plan to consolidate political power and strengthen its position across key states.

Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), identified the governors from Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia States as those in talks to join the APC fold. The discussions have reportedly progressed rapidly, with defections anticipated before the end of 2025, especially ahead of party congresses.

These potential defections follow a trend seen in recent years where governors defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC, driven by desires to align with the ruling party for easier access to federal resources and political influence. Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau are seen as frontline candidates for the move, along with Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers and Alex Otti of Abia.

The anticipation of this political realignment has caused concern within opposition ranks, hinting at Nigeria’s growing drift towards a dominant-party system. However, APC officials emphasize that their doors remain open to new members committed to driving national development under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

The defections, if realized, would notably weaken the opposition’s hold in the northern and southern regions, cementing APC’s dominance and potentially influencing the dynamics of the 2027 presidential election.
