Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has revealed that he nearly quit the music industry and considered moving abroad after the sudden collapse of Mo’Hits Records in 2012. The record label, which he co-founded with D’banj, was one of the most successful in Nigeria, producing multiple hits and launching major careers in Afrobeat.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy shared that the breakup was a difficult period, triggered by irreconcilable differences with D’banj. Feeling that his career might be over, he contemplated leaving the Nigerian music scene altogether. However, the encouragement and support of close friends persuaded him to stay and rebuild a new legacy.
This turning point led to the creation of Mavin Records in May 2012, through which Don Jazzy signed both former Mo’Hits artists and rising stars like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, and Korede Bello. Under his leadership, Mavin Records has become a powerhouse in African music, nurturing talents such as Rema and Ayra Starr.
Don Jazzy described the experience as a moment of growth and resilience, strengthening his resolve never to let setbacks break him again.
