Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has publicly accused former US President Donald Trump of lying to the world regarding allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria. Falana described Trump’s claims as baseless and politically motivated, aimed at misleading the international community and unfairly tarnishing Nigeria’s image.
Addressing the media, Falana emphasized that Trump’s narrative of an existential threat to Christianity in Nigeria is exaggerated and unsupported by credible evidence. He highlighted that the conflicts in areas such as Benue and Plateau states, often cited by Trump, stem primarily from longstanding land disputes and grazing conflicts rather than targeted religious genocide.
The Senior Advocate urged a more nuanced understanding of Nigeria’s complex security challenges, which include ethnic, political, and resource-based factors. Falana criticized the use of these claims to justify external threats and sanctions, arguing that such approaches deepen divisions and undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Falana called on the Nigerian government to focus on internal reforms and conflict resolution mechanisms to address root causes of violence instead of yielding to external pressures based on misinformation. His remarks add to the ongoing debate over the international community’s role and narrative framing of Nigeria’s security situation.
