The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, has appealed to the oil-producing communities, particularly the Owaza clan in Ukwa West Local Government Area, to maintain peace and unity as the state works towards accelerating development in these resource-rich areas. His call comes amid ongoing efforts by the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC) to implement critical infrastructure projects, including electricity and road improvements.

Emetu stressed that peace is a vital precondition for the success of government initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and socio-economic conditions in the oil-bearing regions. He urged traditional rulers and community leaders to discourage divisive actions and promote cooperation among their people.

The state government, under Governor Alex Otti, has reportedly increased funding and prioritized projects in oil-producing communities such as Owaza, the largest oil-producing community in Abia. These projects include reconstruction of major roads, drilling of water boreholes, and rural electrification schemes that seek to uplift the standard of living and boost economic activities.

Additionally, the government has pledged equitable resource sharing at both the local and state levels, assuring communities that they will benefit fairly from oil revenues and development programs. This comes as efforts intensify to address historical neglect and marginalization that had previously slowed progress in the oil-producing enclaves.

The Deputy Governor’s remarks underscore Abia’s commitment to harmonious coexistence and inclusive growth, recognizing that peaceful communities are essential to attracting investment and maximizing the potential of the state’s oil resources.
