The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a significant disciplinary step by expelling prominent members, including the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, from the party. The decision was announced at the PDP’s 2025 National Convention held at Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The motion for the expulsion was moved by Chief Olabode George, a founding member of the party and former National Vice Chairman (South), and was seconded by Bauchi State PDP Chairman Samaila Burga. The party cited anti-party activities, fostering disunity, and legal battles that have been detrimental to the party’s interest as the reasons for the expulsions.
The decision was overwhelmingly ratified by delegates from across Nigeria, underscoring the PDP’s commitment to restoring unity, discipline, and focus ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party emphasized its resolve to eradicate internal divisions that have hampered its progress and cohesion.
Wike, Fayose, and Anyanwu had been under scrutiny for alleged involvement in activities that undermined the PDP, including supporting rival political candidates in the 2023 elections and engaging in litigations against the party. Despite their past contributions to the PDP, the leadership deemed their actions incompatible with party unity.
Reactions from the expelled members have been limited, though Nyesom Wike’s aide issued a subtle remark hinting at disagreement. The PDP has spared some senior figures, such as former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, calling him a respected leader with whom issues can be amicably resolved.
This landmark move signals a decisive shift within PDP as it prepares for the challenges of the 2027 elections, seeking to present a united front and address internal dissent.
