As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced its 2025 Nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. This vital democratic exercise began its online pre-registration phase on August 18, 2025, inviting all eligible citizens to participate through an accessible digital platform. The physical registration at designated centers nationwide will follow starting August 25, 2025, running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.
The CVR is mandated by the Nigerian constitution to ensure that all citizens, especially those who have turned 18 since the last general elections, have the opportunity to register to vote. Beyond fresh registrations, this three-month exercise accommodates numerous crucial categories of voters including those who missed previous registrations, individuals seeking voter card replacements due to loss or damage, and voters needing to update their details or transfer their registration within or across states.
INEC has streamlined the registration process by allowing initial online submission of personal data on the official portal, where prospective voters can upload photographs and select appointment dates for biometric verification at physical centers. This pre-registration feature aims to ease logistical challenges and reduce waiting times onsite.
The commission emphasizes that registration is free of charge and cautions the public to report any officials soliciting payments. Registration centers are located at INEC local government offices and designated centers, with further locations to be announced to increase accessibility. Furthermore, INEC assures inclusivity by pledging access for internally displaced persons (IDPs), pregnant women, and others requiring assistance during the registration process.
The CVR process is crucial as only those registered will have the legal right to vote in upcoming elections. As such, the exercise provides more than just biometric data collection; it fosters public confidence and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system. Voters are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure their voices count in shaping Nigeria’s leadership and policies for the future.
By actively participating, Nigerians reaffirm their commitment to democracy and help strengthen the nation’s electoral integrity with a robust and accurate voter register ahead of the 2027 polls.
