In a demonstration of deepening ties and mutual strategic interests, Germany and Japan have pledged to enhance their security cooperation amid growing concerns over China’s increasingly assertive actions in East Asia. This commitment comes following their first-ever “strategic dialogue,” held in Tokyo, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations between these two key global economies.
Official talks were co-chaired by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, highlighting the urgency for stronger partnerships to maintain stability in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape. Both countries emphasized their shared democratic values and commitment to upholding international law in the face of regional challenges.
Germany has described Japan as a “special partner in Asia” sharing fundamental principles critical to global peace. The countries already have a bilateral acquisition and cross-servicing agreement, enabling more seamless joint military exercises between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the German armed forces.
Foreign Minister Wadephul pointedly criticized China for its repeated attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the South and East China Seas. He warned that such escalations could threaten global trade and security, underscoring the interconnected nature of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. Meanwhile, China responded by emphasizing the Taiwan issue as an internal matter and urged peaceful dialogue to resolve tensions.
Beyond security, Japan and Germany agreed to collaborate on economic security, including the diversification of supply chains and safeguarding critical trade routes, vital for the prosperity of both regions. Discussions also touched on global flashpoints such as Ukraine, North Korea, and the Middle East, highlighting the broad scope of their cooperation.
