The Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, Adamawa State, has remanded a businessman, Mamuda Duma, following allegations that he impregnated a housewife and compelled her to terminate the pregnancy. The case came to court after a complaint was lodged by the woman’s husband, Ahmadu Lawal, who accused Duma of having an ongoing affair with his wife.
Lawal revealed that he discovered the affair last year and had warned Duma multiple times, but the relationship persisted. He further alleged that Duma pressured his wife into aborting a three-month pregnancy, an act that compelled him to report the situation to the police.
Despite pleas from Duma and some of his friends to withdraw the complaint, Lawal maintained the case, providing evidence including recorded conversations. When arraigned, the defendant denied the allegations. Presiding Judge Chief Magistrate Muhammed Njidda ordered the remand of Duma pending trial, which has been scheduled to begin on September 1, 2025.
This case highlights the sensitive and complex nature of domestic disputes involving allegations of infidelity, reproductive coercion, and the legal processes involved in addressing such claims. The court’s decision to remand the accused emphasizes the seriousness with which these matters are treated under the law.
