In a significant political move, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, the only All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker in the Abia State House of Assembly, has publicly justified his defection to the Labour Party (LP), citing internal crises within APC and the admirable leadership of Governor Alex Otti.

Akaliro, who represents Umuahia North State Constituency, revealed his decision comes after careful consideration of the political landscape and his constituents’ interests. In a press statement, he emphasized that the APC’s internal disarray and lack of cohesive leadership left him with no choice but to seek a more stable and progressive platform.

“I decided to join Governor Alex Otti’s camp because of his undeniable achievements in Abia State,” Akaliro said. He praised Otti’s transformation agenda, which has rapidly changed the face of governance in the state through infrastructural development, power solutions, and enhanced social programs.

The defection resonates amid a wave of political realignments in Abia, where several lawmakers and key political figures have shifted loyalty to the Labour Party, attracted by the governor’s progressive policies and growing political clout.

Akaliro’s move is seen as a blow to the APC in Abia, which has struggled to consolidate influence following poor performances in recent elections. The lawmaker’s defection also strengthens the Labour Party’s position as a formidable force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts view these defections as reflective of the changing dynamics in Abia politics, where voters and politicians increasingly prioritize effective governance and development over party loyalty.
