The Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti has announced plans to formally honour Professor Nnennaya Oti, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer who announced the results of the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state. This decision comes in recognition of her unwavering integrity and courage during one of the most contentious polls in Abia’s political history.

Professor Oti, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), stood firm in the face of intense pressure, intimidation, and attempts at manipulation by political actors to alter the election results. Her steadfast commitment ensured that the true mandate of the people was upheld, notably rejecting falsified results from Obingwa Local Government Area. Her declaration that the votes of the people must count won the admiration of voters and many Nigerians nationwide.

During the announcement of Labour Party candidate Alex Otti as the winner with 175,467 votes, Professor Oti made it clear that her role was guided by a commitment to democracy and transparency. Her courage even compelled the state government to retract earlier false allegations of bias against her.

Governor Otti praised Professor Oti for her bravery and professionalism, noting that her actions set a new standard for electoral conduct in Nigeria. The planned honour is expected to include public recognition and other gestures celebrating her contribution to the democratic process.

This move by the Abia State Government is seen as a strong statement in support of credible elections and a signal to electoral officers everywhere about the importance of integrity in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
