The Abia State Government has embarked on a robust sanitation drive targeting the cleanliness of markets across the state by deploying specialized waste disposal trucks. This initiative aims to rid markets of accumulated filth, enhance environmental hygiene, and improve public health standards.

The state’s Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has rolled out the operation with the support of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, emphasizing a cleaner and greener Abia. Equipped with pay loaders, compactors, and dedicated waste evacuation vehicles, ASEPA is focusing efforts on known problem areas including marketplaces, drainage systems, and motor parks.

Ambrose Jonah, Deputy General Manager of ASEPA for Umuahia Zone, revealed that frequent market cleanups will be supported by community engagement strategies involving local traders and market leaders. The administration has also warned that anyone caught littering the environment faces fines of up to N20,000 and possible prosecution.

In addition to the cleanup, Abia State is advancing plans to establish waste recycling plants in key cities like Aba and Umuahia to foster sustainable waste management practices. The overall goal is to transition the state from traditional waste disposal towards resource recovery and environmental sustainability.

The cleanup exercise represents the state government’s commitment to transforming Abia into a modern, smart state with improved sanitation services that boost the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
