The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for pursuing Nigeria’s permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council while the country continues to grapple with worsening insecurity. The ADC described the government’s focus on international prestige as “absurd” and a neglect of urgent domestic crises that threaten the nation’s stability.

In a statement released by Deputy National Publicity Secretary Jackie Wayas, the ADC argued that the government’s priority should be on tackling the escalating insurgency, farmer-herder clashes, and banditry ravaging several states across Nigeria. Wayas highlighted the severe consequences of insecurity on food production, warning that millions face hunger as farmers abandon their fields amid violence. The recent public display of heavily armed bandits in Katsina State symbolized the depth of the security breakdown, an embarrassment to the nation, the ADC said.

The ADC took a firm stance that it is premature for Nigeria to seek a place of global leadership in the UN Security Council when the country is struggling with fundamental governance issues at home. The party called on the Tinubu administration to redirect its energy toward stabilizing security and the economy, thus restoring public confidence and ensuring Nigerians’ safety and well-being.

While President Tinubu, speaking at the 80th United Nations General Assembly with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing him, reiterated Nigeria’s demand for a permanent UN Security Council seat as part of broader institutional reforms, the ADC sees this as a misplaced foreign policy ambition. The party emphasized that genuine leadership on the global stage can only be credible if Nigeria first secures peace, security, and prosperity for its people.

The ADC’s critique underscores the broader debate within Nigeria about balancing international diplomacy with urgent national challenges — a balance that the opposition insists must prioritize domestic recovery before pursuing global recognition.
