Aregbesola’s Loyalists Raise Alarm Over Alleged Assassination Plot

Supporters of former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, have raised serious concerns over an alleged coordinated plot to assassinate the prominent political figure. The loyalists, organized under the group Omoluabi Progressives, describe a series of escalating threats, inflammatory rhetoric, and state-backed actions as evidence of a sinister agenda to silence Aregbesola permanently under the guise of political rivalry.

In a statement signed by Oluwaseun Abosede, the group’s spokesperson and organizing secretary, the Omoluabi Progressives highlighted a timeline of disturbing events and hostile statements targeting Aregbesola. Notably, a July 23 rally attended by Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho featured a declaration interpreted as a call for violence against Aregbesola, with the phrase “Ilẹ o mú wọn” (the land will consume them). Further veiled threats followed, including social media posts amplified by presidential aides suggesting severe consequences for Aregbesola’s political choices.

The rhetoric intensified on August 14 when journalist Gbonka Ebiri publicly branded Aregbesola a “sell-out” and urged that he face the “wrath of Yorubaland.” On the same day, a political rally in Sagamu, Ogun State, where Aregbesola was scheduled to campaign for a House of Representatives bye-election candidate, was forcefully disrupted by police operatives wielding an Armoured Personnel Carrier. The venue was vandalized, campaign equipment seized, and Aregbesola barred from entering.

The Omoluabi Progressives condemned these coordinated acts of intimidation and physical obstruction as the “anatomy of assassination politics.” They insist Aregbesola has committed no crime by charting an independent political path through the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and that his constitutional rights must be respected.

Aligning with coalitions such as the Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups, the Omoluabi Progressives warned that any attempt to harm Aregbesola will be fiercely resisted, emphasizing that political discourse and competition should never degenerate into violence or intimidation.

The group called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the threats and protect the democratic process, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant against political extremism and uphold peace and unity across Yorubaland.
