The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently engaged with student leaders across Nigerian tertiary institutions to explain the rationale behind their planned strike action. According to ASUU leadership, the strike is not motivated by personal or trivial issues but is aimed squarely at addressing systemic problems undermining the quality of university education in Nigeria.

ASUU highlighted that the union’s longstanding demands center on proper funding of universities, payment of outstanding earned allowances, improved working conditions for academic staff, and respect for university autonomy. Union officials emphasized that these concerns directly affect both the lecturers’ welfare and the academic standards students experience on campus.

The union lamented the government’s failure to honor the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, which was supposed to ensure adequate funding and support for federal universities. In recent negotiations, ASUU has consistently called on the government to fulfill its commitments, warning that continued neglect will lead to deteriorating higher education quality and industrial actions.

Student leaders were urged to understand that the strike is aimed at safeguarding the future of tertiary education in Nigeria. ASUU reiterated that the strike would continue until substantial progress is made to address the union’s key demands.
