Asaba, the Delta State capital, is currently agog as athletes from across the country arrive for the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG). The week-long sporting festival, which serves as a platform to discover and nurture young talents, is scheduled to officially commence after the successful conclusion of the Delegates Registration Meeting (DRM).
The DRM, which brought together officials from the Federal Ministry of Sports, state sports councils, and coaches, finalized logistics, accreditation, and technical details for the games. With that phase concluded, the arrival of athletes signals the beginning of one of Nigeria’s most important grassroots sporting events.
According to the Local Organising Committee (LOC), contingents from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to compete in over 30 sporting events ranging from athletics, football, gymnastics, taekwondo, swimming, basketball, and table tennis, among others.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, whose state is hosting the Games for the second consecutive time, assured that Asaba is fully prepared to provide a safe, conducive, and competitive atmosphere. He noted that the Youth Games continue to be a fertile ground for discovering stars who later shine at continental and global competitions.
Sports analysts believe that the 9th NYG will not only produce the next generation of Nigerian athletes but also boost grassroots sports development while strengthening unity among youths across the federation.
The official opening ceremony is expected to hold at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, with thousands of young athletes showcasing their talent and dreams of representing Nigeria on the global stage.
