Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stern warning about Nigeria’s political future, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of steering the country towards a dangerous dictatorship. Speaking during a recent meeting with Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, Atiku underscored his commitment to defending Nigerians and the nation’s democracy from what he described as an emerging autocratic regime.

Atiku lamented that the democratic gains achieved since 1999 are being steadily dismantled under Tinubu’s government, which he characterized as intent on dominating, silencing dissent, and undermining institutions. He cited increasing suppression of opposition voices, the funneling of state contracts to cronies, and the weaponization of national institutions as signs of creeping authoritarianism.

The former vice president stressed that this trend is not merely governance but a conquest that threatens the civic freedoms and economic well-being of ordinary Nigerians. He highlighted the need for a united broad coalition to resist the entrenchment of such “dictatorial practices” and restore true democracy in Nigeria.

During the meeting, Tambuwal, Malami, and Atiku aligned on the urgent need to protect opposition figures and democratic institutions amid rising political violence and repression. They discussed strategies to rally Nigerians around democratic values and bolster opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite his criticisms, Atiku reaffirmed the necessity of peaceful democratic participation and governance reforms to safeguard Nigeria’s future. His warnings echo growing concerns about the political climate as the country approaches a critical electoral period.
