Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised the late Audu Ogbeh, highlighting his pioneering role in championing youth participation in politics through what is now known as the Not-Too-Young-to-Run movement in Benue State. Atiku recounted that Ogbeh was among the earliest leaders to demonstrate that young Nigerians could meaningfully contribute to governance, having been elected to the Benue State House of Assembly in 1979 at just 32 years old.
Atiku emphasized that Ogbeh’s political career, which included roles as deputy speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and later federal ministerial positions, inspired a generation of young Nigerians to seek leadership positions. Ogbeh’s example challenged entrenched norms that restricted political leadership to older individuals, helping to open doors for youth inclusion in governance.
The Not-Too-Young-to-Run movement officially gained national traction decades later, but Atiku credits trailblazers like Ogbeh for setting the early foundation. He urged contemporary and future political leaders to build on this legacy by fostering youth empowerment and ensuring young voices are heard in decision-making processes.
Atiku’s tribute came during reflections on Ogbeh’s legacy following his passing in August 2025, celebrating the former PDP chairman and minister’s dedication to public service, agriculture, and youth engagement. His call serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing young talent for Nigeria’s political and socio-economic development.
