The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has suffered a significant blow with the defection of its only member in the House of Representatives, Pastor Ojotu Ojema, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The lawmaker, representing Agatu/Apa Federal Constituency, made his defection official in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House.
Hon. Ojema cited wide consultations with political stakeholders and constituents as a driving force behind his decision to join the APC. He expressed confidence in the leadership and developmental vision of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, describing the governor’s agenda as people-focused and progressive.
The defection marks a key development amidst shifting political alignments in Benue, weakening the PDP’s hold in the state as APC continues to gain influence. Ojema’s move is seen as part of a broader trend of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Though the PDP has tried to downplay the impact, the loss of its only House of Representatives member in Benue poses challenges for the party’s grassroots strength and organizational cohesion in the state.
