Prominent African Democratic Congress chieftain, Dele Momodu, has dismissed assertions that Nigeria’s opposition parties are behind former US President Donald Trump’s controversial claim of Christian genocide in Nigeria. In a recent interview, Momodu criticized such narratives as unfounded and a sign of political desperation.

Momodu explained that the opposition is currently focused on reorganizing itself and lacks the capacity or interest to influence international statements, especially those made in Washington. He emphasized that blaming the opposition is a common tactic used by some political actors in Nigeria when issues are unfavorable to the ruling party.

The controversy erupted after Trump designated Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ regarding human rights abuses and threatened possible military action if the government did not effectively address the killings of Christians. Some Nigerian officials, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alleged that the opposition instigated Trump’s statements to destabilize the government. Momodu strongly refuted this, urging the administration to focus on combating insecurity rather than politicizing the matter.

He also highlighted the grave security challenges facing Nigeria, citing the suffering of various communities affected by violence. Momodu called on the government to show empathy and take decisive action to protect all citizens, urging national unity and sincerity in addressing security threats.
