Former U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly advocated that the assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk should receive the death penalty, following Kirk’s tragic killing during a public speaking event at Utah Valley University.
Charlie Kirk, 31, a prominent right-wing commentator and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while addressing an audience of around 3,000 people in an outdoor event space at the university in Utah. The shooting happened after Kirk responded to a politically sensitive question about mass shootings, with a shot reportedly fired from the rooftop of a nearby building.
Authorities apprehended a suspect, a 22-year-old man named Tyler Robinson, who faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated murder. The suspect allegedly sent messages about the shooting via social media prior to the attack and was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt.
In a public statement on social media following the arrest, Donald Trump expressed his deep condolences to Kirk’s family and mourners and stressed that the assassin must face the severest punishment under the law. Trump tweeted, “The coward who assassinated Charlie Kirk must be executed. Justice for Charlie!” Trump’s comments have echoed the sentiments of many conservatives who view Kirk’s death as a political assassination and a grave attack on free speech.
Kirk was a vocal supporter of Trump during his presidential campaigns and worked to mobilize youth support for conservative causes. His death has ignited renewed discussions about political violence, freedom of expression, and national security in the United States.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with Utah officials emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and unity against violence. FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the swift law enforcement response and ongoing efforts to prevent similar tragedies.
The case now moves toward prosecution, with charges against the suspect carrying the potential for capital punishment under Utah law.
