Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, the D’Tigers, saw their impressive run at the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket Championship come to an end following a 91–75 defeat to Senegal in the quarterfinals held in Luanda, Angola.

The D’Tigers entered the knockout stage with strong momentum, having maintained an unbeaten record throughout the group matches, which included a dominant 87–66 victory over defending champions Tunisia. Led by standout performances from NBA star Josh Okogie, Nigeria showcased skill and resilience early in the tournament.

However, Senegal, a powerhouse with a storied Afrobasket history that includes five titles, proved a formidable opponent. The team’s ability to exploit defensive gaps and capitalize on scoring opportunities gave them the edge. Senegal’s leading players, such as Brancou Badio and Jean Jacques Boissy, displayed exceptional form, making key plays that shifted the game in their favor.

The loss was a disappointment for the D’Tigers, who had aimed to secure a spot in the semifinals and extend their quest for continental glory. Analysts noted that Nigeria’s slow start and turnovers contributed to the gap Senegal established early on, affecting Nigeria’s ability to mount an effective comeback.

Despite the setback, the D’Tigers’ performance throughout the tournament reaffirmed their status as one of Africa’s top basketball teams. The experience gained will be invaluable as they look ahead to future international competitions.

The focus now shifts to regrouping, training, and preparing for upcoming tournaments with the goal of returning stronger and vying once again for the Afrobasket crown.
