The crisis plaguing the Labour Party nationwide has been attributed to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, according to Elizabeth Ativie, the factional Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party. Ativie alleges that Obi’s actions since the 2023 general elections have deepened divisions and instability within the party.

Ativie accused Obi of fostering factionalism by rejecting peace deals brokered to reconcile the party’s divided factions and of hosting illegal meetings aimed at undermining party leadership. She asserted that Obi’s refusal to align with party directives and his public calls for members to vote for opposition candidates in recent bye-elections have exacerbated the crisis.

The Edo chairman described Obi’s behaviour as a betrayal of the party’s values, pointing out that his failure to commit fully to Labour Party’s unity and agenda has weakened the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections. She called on all members to remain loyal to the party leadership and work towards restoring cohesion.

Obi’s camp, however, has distanced itself from the accusations, framing the crisis as a complex issue involving multiple interests. The ongoing internal disputes highlight the critical challenges the Labour Party faces as it tries to solidify its position as a major political force in Nigeria.
