Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that he has no intention of contesting for any elective position in the 2027 general elections.
El-Rufai, who has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for over two decades, made this clarification following speculations that he might be eyeing a presidential or senatorial bid. He stated that his focus is no longer on political office but on contributing to the country in other ways, particularly through mentorship, advisory roles, and strengthening democratic institutions.
He explained that while he remains passionate about Nigeria’s progress, his decision to stay away from elective positions was deliberate, stressing that leadership is not limited to holding political office. Instead, he noted, there are other meaningful avenues to contribute to national development.
Political observers believe El-Rufai’s statement may reshape ongoing conversations about potential candidates in the 2027 race, as his name had often been mentioned among possible contenders.
The former governor, however, urged Nigerians to rally behind credible leaders with vision and integrity, noting that the country’s challenges demand committed individuals ready to sacrifice personal ambition for national interest.
