British boxing great Ricky Hatton, a former two-division world champion, has passed away at the age of 46, the World Boxing Association confirmed on September 14, 2025. Hatton, known as “The Hitman,” was found dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester. Authorities have stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
Hatton’s prolific boxing career spanned 15 years, during which he won titles such as the WBA, IBO, and IBF light-welterweight championships, as well as the WBA welterweight world title. He amassed an impressive record of 45 wins out of 48 fights, including some of the most memorable bouts against legends like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
Despite his success in the ring, Hatton candidly spoke about his personal struggles with depression, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts following his retirement in 2012. He had planned a comeback fight in Dubai in 2025 and was actively training before his death.
The World Boxing Association paid tribute to Hatton, praising him as a true champion and a legendary figure whose legacy will endure in boxing history and among fans worldwide.
Tributes from across the boxing community and fans poured in after the sudden news, mourning the loss of one of Britain’s most beloved sporting icons.
