The family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has clarified that activist Omoyele Sowore was not involved in the arrest of Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor. Both Emmanuel Kanu and Ejimakor were detained following the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held in Abuja on October 20, 2025, which was led by Sowore but the family insists his role was strictly as a protest organizer and not linked to the arrests.

The arrests occurred during a police crackdown on the demonstration, which saw security forces deploying tear gas and making several detentions amid attempts to disperse the crowd. The detainees were charged with inciting disturbances, breach of public peace, obstructing traffic, and violating a court injunction prohibiting protests in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Human rights activists, including Sowore himself, condemned the heavy-handed approach of the police and demanded the immediate release of all arrested protesters. Despite the family’s clarification, the incident has intensified calls for the protection of protest rights and greater accountability from Nigerian security agencies.

Senior figures like former Senate President Adolphus Wabara have also weighed in, urging authorities to free the detainees promptly and condemning the alleged brutality. The events highlight the escalating tension between security operatives and pro-Biafra activists, as well as the broader struggle for civil liberties in Nigeria.
