Renowned Nigerian human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has sharply criticized the United States’ response to the allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria. In a recent statement, Falana firmly said that the US has never been a savior to any country, highlighting that such claims often mask complex realities and geopolitical interests.

Responding specifically to former US President Donald Trump’s declaration of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over purported Christian genocide, Falana dismissed these assertions as false and politically motivated. He stated that the label and related threats have done more harm than good by exacerbating tensions and misrepresenting Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges.

Falana stressed that these accusations divert attention from Nigeria’s internal governance lapses, security failures, and socio-economic issues that underlie the ongoing violence. He called on the Nigerian government to focus on restoring peace and justice through transparent and inclusive policies rather than relying on external narratives.

The SAC also condemned Western countries for selectively intervening or ignoring crises based on their interests, cautioning Nigerians not to expect salvation from foreign actors. Instead, he urged unity among Nigerians to confront challenges locally.

Falana’s comments contribute to the wider discourse on religious violence in Nigeria, the international community’s role, and the importance of nuanced understanding free from politicization and misinformation.
