Foreign policy expert Dr. Peter Phares has called on former U.S. President Donald Trump to establish an emergency military base in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, in response to alleged genocide and escalating violence in the country. Phares emphasized that such a move would be critical in providing timely humanitarian intervention and ensuring rapid response capabilities in the troubled region.
Phares argued that the dire security situation, characterized by ethnic clashes, religious violence, and widespread killings, demands immediate and robust international involvement. Establishing a base in Port Harcourt, a strategic urban center with critical infrastructure, would enable more effective coordination of relief efforts and protect vulnerable populations.
While the Nigerian government denies accusations of genocide, emphasizing that violence affects multiple ethnic and religious communities, experts like Phares maintain that international engagement is imperative to prevent further atrocities and stabilize the region.
The appeal comes amid heightened global scrutiny of Nigeria’s security challenges and the recent threats of U.S. military action voiced by former President Trump.
