Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has declared that he could bring an end to the state’s persistent banditry crisis within two months if full control of security agencies were placed under his command.
Speaking on the worsening insecurity in Zamfara, Lawal lamented that despite his administration’s efforts, the lack of direct authority over security formations has limited the effectiveness of the fight against bandits. He stressed that state governors, as chief security officers, are often held accountable by citizens but lack the operational control to deploy or command security operatives.
The governor explained that with direct control, he would swiftly implement strategies tailored to Zamfara’s unique terrain and security challenges, ensuring a coordinated and decisive crackdown on criminal groups. He added that local intelligence and community cooperation would play a crucial role in dismantling bandit networks.
Lawal also criticized the current centralized security structure, which he said hampers timely responses to attacks and prolongs the suffering of innocent residents. He called on the federal government to consider devolving more powers to state governments to make security management more effective.
