Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has reassured northern Nigerians that the presidency will return to the region in 2031, following the completion of President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated two-term tenure. Speaking on TVC on September 14, 2025, Governor Bago urged northerners aspiring to the presidency to exercise patience and wait for their opportunity in the next presidential cycle.
Bago emphasized the importance of respecting the established rotational zoning agreement between the North and South, which he believes is vital for national unity and peaceful coexistence. He stated, “When President Tinubu finishes his eight years, power will come to the North, and northerners who wish to contest can then compete.” He stressed that Nigeria’s current peace and stability owes much to this power rotation principle.
The governor also expressed unwavering loyalty and support for President Tinubu within Niger State, assuring that dissent is minimal and the governor and his party remain committed to Tinubu’s agenda. He described Tinubu’s presidency as an ongoing opportunity for the South and argued that the North had its chance in previous election cycles.
Complementing Governor Bago’s remarks, other northern leaders, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, have also called for patience among northern politicians and stakeholders. Akume reiterated that the North’s turn to field the presidential candidate is indeed in 2031, not 2027, encouraging a spirit of unity behind the current administration.
This message of patience and unity comes amid concerns from parts of the North about regional marginalization and positions within the federal government. Bago and Akume’s appeal aims to temper expectations and promote stability as Nigeria heads toward the 2027 general elections.
