Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided recent updates on the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This nationwide registration campaign, which began online on August 18, 2025, and moved to physical registration on August 25, 2025, has seen significant participation from eligible Nigerian voters across the country.
According to INEC, over 69,000 Nigerians pre-registered online within the first seven hours of the exercise, a number that continues to rise as more citizens take advantage of the opportunity to register or update their voter information. The commission urges all eligible voters, particularly young Nigerians who have recently turned 18, to participate actively to ensure they can vote in the upcoming elections.
INEC’s portable online platform allows new voters to register, existing voters to update their personal information, transfer their registration to different polling units, and request replacement voter cards for lost or damaged ones. Additionally, the commission has made it easier for voters to check the status of their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and find designated centers to collect them.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, reiterated that the PVC is a vital tool for citizens to make their voices heard in the democratic process and called for increased awareness and participation to ensure a credible election. The commission also warned against multiple registrations, noting that violators would face legal consequences.
This CVR exercise is crucial in ensuring voter inclusiveness, minimizing electoral fraud, and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy as the nation gears up for one of its most significant electoral events in 2027.
