The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has issued a strong message to the newly appointed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN). The party emphasized that Amupitan’s tenure will be a decisive moment for Nigeria’s democratic future, urging him to prioritize true national interest and uphold electoral integrity.
In a statement by the Labour Party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Prince Tony Akeni, the party acknowledged that the eyes of Nigerians and the global democratic community are on Amupitan as he assumes office. LP called on him to reject any influence from the power of incumbency and other political pressures that could undermine the transparency and fairness of elections.
The party also highlighted the urgent need for Amupitan to resolve internal crises within the Labour Party, specifically adhering to the Supreme Court judgment recognizing Senator Esther Nenadi Usman-led National Working Committee (NWC) as the authentic leadership. LP noted that credibility in managing party leadership disputes would reflect positively on INEC’s commitment to democratic principles.
LP reminded that Amupitan’s leadership is expected to deliver credible elections, improve voter education, and restore trust in Nigeria’s electoral process, especially with the 2027 General Elections approaching. The party’s message succinctly framed the new INEC Chairman’s role as either a redeemer or the potential burial ground of Nigeria’s democracy.
