The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the defection of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a “failed move” and political opportunism.
Rhodes-Vivour formally joined the ADC at an event in Lagos on September 6, 2025, describing the decision as part of a broader coalition aimed at rescuing Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. He called for unity among opposition parties under the ADC platform, which has been adopted as a coalition to challenge the ruling APC and the PDP.
However, APC Lagos spokesperson Seye Oladejo mocked the defection, labeling Rhodes-Vivour’s party switches—from PDP to Labour Party, and now ADC—as opportunistic and lacking ideological commitment. Oladejo urged Rhodes-Vivour to “learn the ropes” rather than continuously hopping between parties. He also insisted that Rhodes-Vivour poses no real threat to APC, asserting confidently that any candidate fielded by the opposition would be defeated in 2027.
The APC’s dismissive tone reflects the party’s determination to maintain its dominance in Lagos, despite efforts by opposition coalitions to consolidate against it.
