The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rebutted Farooq Kperogi’s assertion that President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as INEC Chairman is part of a strategy to “visibilize” Northern Yorubas. Lagos APC described Kperogi’s claim as a mischievous and misleading spin that undermines the meritocratic principles guiding Tinubu’s appointments.
The party’s spokesman emphasized that President Tinubu selects leaders based on competence, integrity, and commitment to national service rather than ethnic or regional considerations. Tinubu’s nomination of Amupitan, a distinguished Yoruba Christian from Kogi State, was highlighted as a testament to meritocracy and inclusivity rather than any ethnic engineering.
Responding to suggestions that Amupitan’s appointment was designed to give ethnic visibility to Northern Yorubas, Lagos APC argued such interpretations detract from the professional qualifications and achievements of the appointee. The party maintained that identity politics should not overshadow the pursuit of effective leadership and national unity.
Lagos APC called on Nigerians to focus on supporting capable leaders and fostering inclusiveness without resorting to divisive ethnic narratives. The party hopes this clarifies any misconceptions and reinforces confidence in Tinubu’s vision of a united, merit-based Nigeria.
