The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a strong response to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent comment describing internet fraudsters known as “Yahoo boys” as “geniuses” who need redirection rather than condemnation.
In a statement released by Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo, the party expressed disappointment in Obi’s remarks, stating that it was inappropriate for a former presidential candidate to appear to downplay the seriousness of fraudulent activities plaguing the nation. Oladejo said, “There is nothing genius about crime. Yahoo Yahoo is a social tragedy, not a talent.”
The APC emphasized the importance of moral integrity and condemned any narrative that could be seen as glorifying or excusing dishonest conduct. Oladejo expressed concern regarding the mixed messages in Obi’s statement, particularly noting the contradiction in condemning corruption while seemingly praising the creativity involved in cybercrime.
However, Obi’s remarks were clarified in his original speech in Onitsha, where he highlighted the need to redirect the energy and creativity of many youths involved in cyber fraud towards productive and innovative enterprises. Obi stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends on channeling youthful talents into ethical ventures that promote national development. He underlined that real wealth is based on integrity, character, and purpose, encouraging young people to embrace hard work and innovation.
The Lagos APC urged Obi and other leaders to prioritize clear messaging that uplifts moral discipline among Nigerian youths, warning against statements that might inadvertently justify unlawful behavior.
This exchange highlights the ongoing national discourse on youth unemployment, cybercrime, and the challenges of restoring societal values amid Nigeria’s complex socio-economic landscape.
