The Lagos State Government has issued a strong defense of its Environmental Sanitation Corps, also known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), following allegations by Nollywood actress Sarah Martins that she was assaulted by the task force during a charity outreach in Lekki Phase 1. Martins claimed she was attacked while cooking free meals for the needy, with the incident reportedly causing burns to her hand from spilled hot oil and the seizure of her cooking equipment.
In viral videos shared on social media, the actress appeared distressed, holding her swollen hand and narrating her ordeal as passersby expressed shock and condemnation over the alleged attack. Martins, known for her humanitarian efforts through the Golden Heart Foundation, said the assault happened during her routine street cooking for vulnerable communities.
Responding to the allegations, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources released a statement justifying the enforcement action. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab emphasized that the charity activity was conducted on a road median, which contravened existing environmental and sanitation regulations designed to maintain public safety, urban order, and environmental protection. Wahab acknowledged the goodwill behind Martins’ philanthropic efforts but stressed that such activities must comply with Lagos State laws and obtain necessary approvals.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to campaigns like #KeepLagosClean and #ZeroToleranceLagos, aimed at preserving the city’s cleanliness, safety, and infrastructure integrity. The statement noted that the actions of arresting and seizing equipment were part of routine enforcement against unauthorized use of public spaces to ensure safe and orderly urban living.
While Sarah Martins was released the same day, the incident has sparked widespread public debate and social media reactions, with many sympathizing with the actress and condemning the harsh measures alleged. However, Lagos officials have urged residents to cooperate with authorities and seek proper channels to carry out charitable activities to avoid conflict and ensure compliance with city regulations.
