The Lagos State Police Command has issued a stern warning to activist Sowore and other groups planning a protest over the ongoing demolition exercise in Oworonshoki. The police emphasized that any demonstration must abide by existing laws, cautioning that unauthorized protests could be disrupted.

The warning comes amid a wave of demolitions targeting structures deemed unsafe or illegally erected in the Oworonshoki area as part of Lagos State’s urban renewal plans. Residents have expressed grief and frustration, with some accusing government-backed demolition teams of using excessive force and failing to provide adequate compensation.

Eyewitness reports reveal that police officers were deployed primarily to maintain law and order during the demolition activities, with authorities denying allegations of police brutality. The Lagos Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, affirmed that the police did not engage in violence but only supported state agencies enforcing the demolition.

Activist groups, including the Take It Back Movement and supporters of Sowore, have vowed to monitor the situation closely and challenge the demolitions, demanding transparent compensation and fair treatment for affected residents.

Lagos authorities maintain the demolition exercise is part of a lawful urban regeneration process to remove structures posing environmental hazards. They pledge to continue compensation efforts while urging residents to cooperate with government directives for community safety.

The police call serves as a clear reminder of the need to seek official permits for protests and the state’s readiness to act against unlawful gatherings during this sensitive period of redevelopment.
