As Nigeria prepares for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for October 20, 2025, a lawyer involved in the activism surrounding the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has accused the Nigerian government of disobeying its own laws through Kanu’s continued detention. The government has held Kanu since 2021 on charges related to terrorism and treason following his re-arrest from Kenya.
The lawyer argued that multiple court rulings have ordered Kanu’s release or proper medical treatment, but the government has disregarded these judicial decisions. This defiance, the lawyer asserted, undermines the rule of law and violates constitutional rights, fueling public anger and demands for justice, which the planned protest seeks to highlight.
While authorities, including the Nigeria Police Force, have deployed heightened security and issued warnings against the protest, the Federal High Court rejected police applications attempting to halt the demonstrations. Activists, led by Omoyele Sowore, remain resolute in pressing for Kanu’s unconditional release through peaceful demonstration.
The protest at the Presidential Villa in Abuja is expected to draw nationwide attention and focus on governance accountability, judicial independence, and civil rights in Nigeria.
