The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has strongly reiterated its commitment to the quest for an independent Biafra, declaring there will be “no going back” following 24 years of relentless nonviolent struggle. This declaration was made public during the group’s 24th-anniversary event held on September 13, 2025.

In a statement delivered by the group’s leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, MASSOB emphasized that its agitation remains firmly grounded on the principles of nonviolence as it continues to advocate for the actualization and restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra. Madu paid tribute to the brave members who have lost their lives over the years to violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.

“Our comrades died innocently, with brave hearts for the Biafra cause. They faced brutal treatment and unjust killings at the hands of security agencies,” Madu said. The group also remembered the families affected by the struggle, acknowledging the trauma and sacrifices borne by those left behind.

MASSOB declared the continued pursuit of Biafra independence as a response to what it describes as the political, economic, academic, religious, cultural, and social marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria. The agitation, according to the group, is a fight against decades of perceived subjective slavery within the Nigerian federation.

The anniversary also served as a platform to confirm MASSOB’s resolve to sustain its advocacy through nonviolent means, eschewing violence despite government crackdowns and intimidation efforts. The group assured the public that the spirit of Biafra would remain unshaken and that the truth of their cause would eventually triumph over falsehood.

MASSOB’s director of information, Mazi Chris Mocha, highlighted that the group was initially formed in 1999 due to the failure of the then Nigerian government to adequately represent and include the Igbos in key positions across the Nigerian polity. Over 24 years, MASSOB has maintained its position, continuing its nonviolent campaign for the creation of an autonomous Biafra, now recognized as the 46th member state of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO).
