Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources has revealed that the long-awaited $700 million Obiafu–Obrikom–Oben (OB3) gas pipeline is now nearing completion, describing it as a landmark project for the country’s energy sector. The minister explained that once operational, the pipeline will play a pivotal role in unlocking Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves, enhancing domestic supply, and boosting exports.
The OB3 pipeline, often referred to as the “backbone” of Nigeria’s gas infrastructure, is designed to connect the eastern and western parts of the country, creating a stronger national gas grid. Officials highlighted that the project, which has suffered several delays over the years due to technical and funding challenges, is now in its final stages and expected to come on stream soon.
According to the minister, the completion of OB3 will significantly expand gas-to-power projects, industrial uses, and household consumption. It will also improve Nigeria’s ability to meet its international commitments on gas supply while supporting the government’s push for cleaner energy and economic diversification.
Analysts say the project could be a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy landscape, as it would reduce the reliance on imported fuel, stabilize electricity supply, and create new opportunities for industries that depend on reliable energy.
