The tragic drowning of Oluwadamilola Balogun, a 400-level student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has raised serious concerns following suspicions voiced by his mother about the true cause of his death. Oluwadamilola, who was recently elected president of the Nigerian Universities Education Students Association (NUESA) for UNILAG’s Faculty of Education, reportedly drowned at Eleko Beach during a gathering to celebrate his new role.
In a heartfelt interview, Elizabeth Abiola, the grieving mother, detailed several inconsistencies in the accounts surrounding her son’s death. She questioned why the students chose to visit a beach venue despite explicit school warnings forbidding such gatherings. She also voiced concerns over the lack of clear photo or video evidence of the beach party and highlighted troubling inconsistencies in the testimonies of the last two individuals who were with her son.
According to the mother’s account, Oluwadamilola was last seen playing football with some locals before deciding to bathe in the sea with two friends. He was subsequently swept away by strong currents, and despite efforts, was found deceased two days later. The family has not retrieved the body, opting instead to conduct burial arrangements on-site in Eleko, following local customs.
Further deepening the mystery, an uncle revealed that a review of Oluwadamilola’s phone showed no evidence of participation or photos from the party prior to the beach outing, leading to suspicions that he may have been deliberately lured to the location.
The family continues to seek justice and clarity, demanding thorough investigations into the incident to uncover the full truth behind the tragic loss. The incident has ignited calls for improved safety measures for students at recreational spots and stricter enforcement of university guidelines.
