In a significant political development in Jigawa State, about 792 women from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on September 12, 2025. The mass defection took place in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area and was warmly received by the wife of the Jigawa State Governor, Amina Umar Namadi.

Mrs. Namadi described the defection as a reflection of the APC government’s strong leadership and its commitment to improving the welfare of citizens, especially women and youths. She assured the new members that the party’s doors remain open for all Nigerians willing to work towards the development of Jigawa State.

The Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, also spoke at the event, highlighting various policies and programs the administration has implemented to boost development and improve the lives of ordinary citizens since coming into power.

Representing the defectors, spokeswoman Amina Waina said their shift of allegiance stemmed from the APC’s genuine efforts to support women within the state. These women vowed to continue mobilizing their peers to back the current administration, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This defection marks another major shift in Jigawa’s political landscape as opposition party members continue to join the ruling party, signaling strong grassroots support for the APC in the run-up to future elections.

The movement bolsters the APC’s position in Jigawa, where the party has already been engaged in intense political contests with the PDP. It further underscores the growing appeal of Governor Umar Namadi’s government among women and suggests a potential advantage for the APC in consolidating power.
