The Nigerian Senate has formally informed suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that she cannot resume her legislative duties despite completing a six-month suspension. The decision stems from ongoing legal proceedings, with the matter still pending before the Court of Appeal.

In a letter dated September 4, 2025, and signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the Senate acknowledged receipt of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s notification of her intention to return to the National Assembly. However, the letter clarified that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, effective from March 6, 2025, remains valid until the judicial process is concluded and the Senate formally reviews the suspension in light of the court’s decision.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter stated. Dr. Danzaria assured that the senator will be informed of the Senate’s decision as soon as the case is resolved.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended by the Senate following allegations of misconduct related to a dispute with the Senate President over seat arrangements during a plenary session. The suspension included the forfeiture of aides, office privileges, and salaries. She challenged the suspension in court and sought to return after the Federal High Court ruled in her favor; however, the Senate leadership maintains that the suspension holds pending the appellate ruling.

Her attempt to return to the Senate in July was met with resistance as security personnel prevented her entry, leading to a standoff with supporters outside the complex.

This latest communication from the Senate underscores the ongoing legal and political tussle surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s status within the National Assembly.
