The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has issued a clarification regarding widespread speculation about the party’s presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, potentially defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The NNPP strongly dismissed claims that Kwankwaso is about to leave the party, reaffirming his commitment to contesting the presidency under the NNPP platform.

The party’s National Secretary, Dr. Ogini Olaposi, emphasized that although the NNPP maintains open options regarding political alliances and coalitions, there is no indication or intention from Kwankwaso to defect to APC. Olaposi described the rumors as unfounded and clarified that Kwankwaso’s focus remains on strengthening the NNPP’s position nationally.

Kwankwaso himself has publicly stated several times that he is not ready to defect and intends to pursue the 2027 presidency with his current party. The NNPP continues to advocate for inclusive coalitions that can effectively challenge the ruling party but insists that any moves would be strategic and consensual, not driven by individual defections.

Political analysts view Kwankwaso as a key player in the opposition landscape, especially in northern Nigeria, where his influence could sway significant voter blocs. The NNPP’s statement aims to quell uncertainties and present a united front as Nigeria heads toward a crucial election cycle.

This clarification comes amidst other high-profile political realignments, reminding observers that speculation often runs ahead of actual developments in Nigeria’s complex electoral environment.
