The North-Central APC Forum has taken a firm stance against the creation of state police in Nigeria, warning that it would lead to anarchy and become a dangerous tool for oppression. The forum expressed fears that granting individual states control over police forces could empower governors to use the police against minority groups, opposition parties, and dissenting voices.

In a statement released on October 3, 2025, the forum emphasized that state police might exacerbate ethnic and political tensions rather than solve Nigeria’s security challenges. They argued that without strong checks and balances, state-controlled police could foster abuse of power and undermine national cohesion.

This position contrasts with recent endorsements by other northern governors who have supported the establishment of state police as a way to combat rampant insecurity effectively. However, the North-Central APC Forum remains skeptical, highlighting the risks of fragmenting the security apparatus.

The forum called instead for comprehensive reforms and support for existing federal police structures to improve security without risking further division. They urged the National Assembly and federal authorities to consider the potential fallout before enacting laws allowing state policing.

As Nigeria continues grappling with insecurity across various regions, the debate over state police reflects deep-seated concerns about governance, power distribution, and the respect for Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and political landscape.
